“Three Man, Two Ball” Passing and Catching Drill

This is another super-simple, classic stick skill drill you can do with players of all ages to give them a ton of reps and touches on the ball in just 10 minutes at your next practice!

This is one of the first lacrosse drills we ever learned! Coaches have been using classics like Three-Man, One-Ball, Three-Man, Two-Ball, and Four-Man, Two-Ball passing drills for decades. They are quick, easy, and they definitely get the job done.

The best practice drills aren't fancy or complex. Every drill should maximize movement and repetition for developing "Muscle Memory" and Hand-Eye Coordination for each player. Fun and Conditioning should also be included. Time your drills for your players' attention span and try Keeping Score in all your practice drills and games to include competition and increase the intensity!

HERE'S THE DRILL:

  • Skill Level: Basic-Intermediate

  • Skills Used: Passing, Catching, Scooping

  • Number of Players: Groups of 3

  • Time: 8-10 Minutes

Figure 1.) Start two players 20-40 yards apart, with one player in the middle. Use shorter distances for younger players, longer distances for older and more advanced players. Groups of three will give all your players more touches with the ball.

Start balls with the two players on the outside. Make sure you have back-up balls at each end of the line for each group to keep the drill moving!

PRACTICE TIPS:

  • Work Hard for One Minute! Rotate the player in the middle every 60 seconds. Give each player two to four turns in the middle. That's just 10-12 minutes or practice time. What are you going to do next, Coach!
  • "Cut!" to the ball. Change Speed and Direction! Players shouldn't just jog in a circle the whole time.
  • Run Hard! If they miss any passes, they should run hard to get the loose ball.
